Sanyo U-K170S 1-3/4-Quart Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle

Cheap Sanyo U-K170S 1-3/4-Quart Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle
==================================================================

Sanyo's stylish, stainless steel electric kettle is loaded with features. A 1500 Watt hidden power element quickly heats water for use making tea, instant coffee, hot chocolate and even can be utilized for infant formula. This eye catching unit has a side and upper water gauge that illuminates a bright, blue LED glow that lets you know the unit is in use and allows you to check the water level. A 1-3/4 quart capacity (7 cups) is plenty for multiple servings. Easily pour with the push button lid ...
  • 1500-watt stainless-steel kettle quickly boils up to 7 cups of water
  • 360-degree swivel power base; side and top water-gauge windows
  • Boil-dry protection and auto-stop boiling for safety; push-button lid
  • Blue LED "on" interior light; cord storage; bilingual instructions included
  • Measures 9-1/5 by 6-4/5 by 10-1/5 inches

This Electric Kettles give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Attractive and boils relatively quickly, but one problem for us.
We loved the look of this kettle and liked the easy-to-read water gauge. Its power is 1500 Watts, which is higher than many comparable kettles. This is a big advantage, as it means that it comes to the boil more quickly. (It's well worth checking the power of kettles before buying them. Some are painfully slow!)

For us, though, there was, unfortunately, one problem. We use our kettle for all sorts of purposes, but mainly for making traditional British tea and we found that after a day or so, the tea tasted odd. My adult son was the first to point it out. I didn't want to believe it, as I loved the kettle. But in the end I was unable to deny it any longer. The tea definitely didn't taste right, even to me.

I did some searching online and found other comments about a "metallic" taste and suggestions for eliminating it. e.g. Boil up lemon juice in the water, and so on. I did try that and it did diminish the scale that had already started to build up. But for us, it...

2. Rusted
I purchased this pot 3 months ago from Amazon.com. Today, I found that the bottom rim (INSIDE!)of this pot was rusted. Although it is still returnable to Amazon.com,
I decided to throw it away; because they charge for the return and I have to pay shipping-waste of time and money. Please check rust from time to time, if you have this pot at home.

Loud but effective
The Sanyo Electric Kettle is loud once it gets going but it does the job well. To be fair, it is obviously not the kettle itself, but the water that makes the noise. The steel design seems to make the boiling experience quite a bit louder than other non-steel models I have seen. I have it on my desk at work, and we have joked that it sounds like a jet engine getting ready to take off.

That being said, I am very happy with it, and compared to some other models, it does have nice visual appeal (sort of the trade for loudness).

This Electric Kettles give to us some advantages, like this :
1. This is The One
Boils fast, switches off promptly when boiled, you can re-boil right away, looks great, ergonomic handle.

We have had this for over two months now and it is still switching off when it boils. Yes, we are British. I spent five days searching for this kettle and reading all the reviews. I ended up buying this one which had no reviews because it reminded me of the very expensive one I had in the UK. So glad I did.

The blue light is just a tiny dot under the water gauge. We didn't want one where the whole thing glowed blue, thankfully this one doesn't.

If you are hyper-sensitive to chemical smells you might have to boil it and empty it several times or perhaps use a limescale removing product to get rid of the 'new' smell. It didn't bother me and I am quite picky about smells. It is worth noting, I suppose, although it was barely noticeable and it is long gone now.

No problem with the base melting, as seen in reviews for other kettles...

2. Poor Quality Product
We've had this kettle for less than 6 months...it's loud, leaky, heavy, and ergonomically unsound. Hoping to find a kettle that is close to the quality of the T-fal Avante...a model we owned for 10 years before it died.

Save your money - don't buy this junk!

Update: 7/17/2012 - sent the kettle in under warranty. Received back - same condition - leaks like a sieve. Thus, the opinion of the kettle as junk now extends to Electra Craft as a company. Consumers beware.

This Electric Kettles give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Come back Russell Hobbs, all is forgiven....
I grew up in Europe with electric kettles so I think I know what to expect. I had to return the M677, as it took too long to turn off. I called their customer service and they said it should take an average of 12 seconds to turn off. The average for mine to click off was 1 minute and 15 seconds (timed only after coming to a vigorous boil with steam escaping). It didn't matter if it was full or not. Only once did it click off in less than one minute. Once I came downstairs and it was still boiling away, I was not sure for how long it was boiling so I decided to return it.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt (their customer service was good - a real human picked up in a few seconds), I replaced it with a model M678 which is a little larger, and its average click off time is 35 seconds. It still feels like it's too slow to click off and most of the time I flick it up manually, but at least I feel I can trust it to turn off if I leave the room. (My old dead Russell Hobbs would...

2. Good overall kettle
Right - this thing's a tank.

I've used this kettle at least once a day for the last six years now and I'm just now smelling burnt plastic when I try to use it. It's pretty much at the end of its life, but it still boils water much faster than the largest burner on my stove top. For the first five and a half years that I've owned this kettle, I've never had any problems with it. It's very portable. I used to constantly tote it back and forth from home to work.

I see only three shortcomings that keep this from being a GREAT kettle. Otherwise I have no serious complaints and would recommend this kettle.

The metal sides become very hot.

The cord's a bit finicky. It's hard to wind up out of the way, and once you do, it just unravels again.

The spout's overlarge. It's really easy to dump two cups of boiling water all over the place just trying to fill a small teacup. It's not so much a problem, as it is just plain annoying. You have to...

Works great for making a thermos of green tea
We have had this thing for most of a year now, and have used it every day to make a big pot of green tea. Here are some tips on doing that.

We bought a 2.2 liter pump thermos. Yes, this kettle is 1.7 liter, but wait. Every day we throw in 5 bags of green tea and a little less than a cup of cold water. Careful how you rip off the string so you don't open up the bags; we find that holding the staple between finger and thumb while pulling the string keeps the bag intact. We somewhat overfill this kettle (no sign of a problem ever) with water to the middle of the circle you'll see on the inside, bring that to a boil, and add it to the thermos.

With green tea you do *not* want to add boiling water, because it makes the tea bitter. But the bit of cold water you put in first brings the temperature down just enough, and adds enough volume that it fills the 2.2L container. That's one day of tea for the two of us -- imagine the antioxidants! Note that the tea...

  • Cordless 6-cup water kettle housed in polished stainless steel
  • Rapid-boil concealed heating element; non-drip spout for graceful pouring
  • Rotary power base; washable lime-scale filter; dual water-level indicators
  • Stay-cool handle; hinged lid with heatproof ball knob; non-slip rubber feet
  • Measures approximately 7 by 10 by 9 inches; 1-year limited warranty

This Electric Kettles give to us some advantages, like this :
1. Don't buy one until they redesign without plastic windows!
The craftsmanship and finish on the stainless Dualit kettle are superior to all others. Unfortunately, the kettle has two major flaws, and the company has an even bigger flaw.

Kettle flaw #1: The cordless base is thin plastic and warps after several months of once-a-day use.

Kettle flaw #2: It's not a matter of 'if', but 'when' it will leak due to cracked plastic windows in the side of the kettle. The plastic windows are pressed into the side openings, which puts the plastic under stress. Repeated use of the kettle causes fine cracks in the plastic where the stresses are concentrated. I guarantee your kettle will leak from these fine stress/heat cracks after approximately 1 year of use. If you have any doubt, google (or any other search) for Dualit, leak, cracked plastic.

Company flaw: horrible warranty and they won't stand behind their product. I had to pay for a replacement cordless base when mine warped after a few months. This was annoying but...

2. Terrific kettle
Great kettle. Our ancient electric kettle bit the dust. We were looking for a replacement that was as well-made and long-lasting. This is perfect. It fills thru the top which has a knob designed so it won't burn your fingers. The handle is similarly well designed. It pours without spilling even when you are in a hurry. The filling window is easily seen and well marked. The on-button is bright. The lever to start it is a simple push bar which shuts off automatically after the water is at a rolling boil. What's not to like? I even have gotten used to the modernistic bullet shape after decades of kettles. Also, it doesn't leak. Sometimes there is condensation between the bottom of the pot and the pad the pot sits on. Its not a leak. I love it and am so happy they are sold in this country.

Replacing this kettle after 11 years
I've had this kettle for 11 years now. I've never had it leak or any other issues with this kettle. I am replacing it as some rust has developed. I use this kettle every day, 2-3 times a day without issue. I am buying it again since I've had such a great experience.
