I have had a diamond knife sharpener for about 5 years now. I can not use a wheat rock. My knife just gets duller. I have a large family and when they come to visite my wife and I they bring there knifes and use my sharpener.We like it so well that I bought them all a diamond knife sharpner for Christmass. I have been a fan of simultaneous dual edge sharpeners, but most professional grade dual edge machines start around $1000 and need careful adjustment as well as are large and heavy, which is great as a stable platform but results in a hefty shipping cost. When I saw the Mcgowan here at Amazon the unbelievably reasonable pricing and the great feedback from several experienced users convinced me to make the order. M
Fortunately I read the instructions which emphasized the initial runs would be to acquire a new angle, and from then the machine would sharpen the knife with a consistent hollow grind. My first attempts were disappointing because of the roughness of the first cuts, and I thought there would be a lot of lost metal and burrs to deal with, but after the 3rd try and a little trust in the instructions I found the groove and the type of knife the Mcgowan was suitable for and haven't looked back since then.
My suggestion for those who have run into a similar...
